Melissa Cooney, middle, is seen in this Patch archive photo after Western won a grant from the Naugatuck Education Foundation recently.

Excuse the errors on my previous post. See, it's worth the time to proofread.
Carol Grenier May 22, 2013 at 06:56 am
Does anyone have knowledge of whether Ms Cooney is a relative of the late Helen Cooney, who taughtRead More at Western School in the 50's as a kindergarten and third grade teacher? She was a wonderful teacher who I remember fondly and gave me a good start in life through her teaching. Her husband Dick Cooney ran a little general store on Rubber Ave, and I also went to school with he daughter Nancy and son Richard. A very nice family.

Ms D'Alessandro , who ever is the new principal at Western, will have some very big shoes toRead More fill...They just don't get much better than this AMAZING principal! We love you, major hugs and congrats, MsMolner n Victoria xo

Glad to see Hillside School's Epic Tales program receive some of the grant money -- Mr. ForishRead More volunteer's his own time every Tuesday after school to provide this awesome program to the kids :) Thank you NEF!

Congratulations to this year's grant winners who will use them for such innovative programs in ourRead More borough schools. So proud of those Western Students who performed a bit of their wonderful show 'Disney's Beauty and the Beast, Jr.' at this event.

Hi Pays Attention, "job descriptions written god knows how long ago" and "suspect toRead More evaluation through those descriptions." is in large part exactly why I find it difficult to support, New/Revised/ Restaff-it, changes to the System. Somewhere, over the years, I have seen described the various responsibilities of the Management and Administrative functions of the Education System in Naugatuck. I truely think I have seen the "what does this person do" buzz words of - instructional and curricular requirements; articulation of the curriculum; district-wide assesments(of Mastery type Tests) needs/actions;budgets;and others, used to define jobs repetatively from the Superintendent down through Department Heads. And I am willing to bet that a lot of the work is actually done by the Teaches and passed upstairs! So I say again, how can you support increases in staffing to perform the same work at 6-8 levels within each school? And, how can you possibly do a performance review and needs evaluation, if you do not have valid data as to who/what/where tasks/responsibilities are assigned?
Pays Attention April 10, 2013 at 09:30 pm
Mr.Mike - I beleive we are forced to adhere to the mandates if we want access to the fundingRead More programs. If we move away from accepting the funding, I am unsure as to what requirements we could shed and which we would still have to adhere to but without the funding aid. Probably not an easy switch on any level. Municipalities have been looking at any and all angles to change the direction of their budgets and that one doesn’t seem to be a taker by any that I am aware.
Pays Attention April 10, 2013 at 09:13 pm
Sorry Mr. Mike - I didn't see this post. I will see what I can find, but I am suspect to evaluationRead More through those descriptions.

Definitly needs to be more of this going on in the schools. Look at those kids faces! They are soRead More proud of what they invented! They are learning in a way that is exciting and fun. Sometimes learning needs to be out of the box and what a great way to teach kids about science and math.
Johnna Hunt April 5, 2013 at 03:11 am
Congratulations to all our students who participated in this year's Invention Convention! AsRead More special thank you to all the parents who supported these inventions, to Mrs. Raff and Mrs. Walmsley for organizing this wonderful learning opportunity, and most of all to all our young inventors for sharing their amazing ideas and talents!!!!

I uploaded some more pics of the show and the credit goes to Annette Hughes for taking them.

Cool, Scott. If anyone out there has photos or video from tonight, please upload them here. Thanks

I was at the show tonight and for all those that didn't go really missed a FANTASTIC presentation ofRead More The Great Gatsby by the French students. The NHS Symphonic band played three pieces and the Winter Percussions played as well. This was one of the best shows I have been to and hats off to everyone who participated
Tax Man April 2, 2013 at 10:35 pm
I believe the position is not new yet filling a vacant one. You should take a look at the MunicipalsRead More side... It has been increasing at a far faster rate than the BOE's and catching up quickly. The BOE though gets 2/3 or so from the state so in reality it is much less that the residents pay into than the Municipal's budget and they have far less employees. Then again we pay state taxes also that come full circle in other ways.... Unfortunately until our leaders in Hartford spend the time to reform the unions and how they operate in CT the taxes will always increase.
Mr Mike April 2, 2013 at 09:32 pm
I guess it's no longer a maybe, it's a definitely; none of Naugatuck's governmental units and noneRead More of it's employees pays any attention to the needs/opinions of the people who put them in their positions and pay their wages-the taxpayers! How many new/revised positions does the Education Organization need? They cannot do a good job with the existing overblown budget for their function, now they want two , high paid, great benefit positioins funded. Oh well, doesn't matter that the taxpayers do not have the additional money to pay them. They will just take your house/vehicle for back taxes and gouge the money that way!
James323 April 2, 2013 at 03:58 pm
Trim the salaries of all local employees to pay for the new position, we are sick and tired creatingRead More more government , we need less of them
Rocky Vitale April 1, 2013 at 09:38 pm
Mr. Mike, I have the Assistant Super's job description. If you email me at Rockyv180@aol.com, I canRead More get it to you. It differs slightly from what's posted in the article because the article contains the job posting, not job description. I don't believe the Super has a job description. The Super goes by sets of goals that are set up by the Board so it can differ year to year. Still trying to see if there is any simple outline. But I can get you a copy of the goals if you would like. The principal's, in my pinion, have way too much piled on as it is. With the new teacher evaluations and common core curriculum rolling out, besides planning and placement team meetings, student discipline, meeting with parents, etc. they are at max.
Mr Mike April 1, 2013 at 12:58 am
Rocky, Thanks for your efforts. I did not try/mean to rush you. I did not anticipate that you wouldRead More go anytime Easter Weekend. Hope you are having a good holiday. Whenever or if, you get any more info on Job Descriptions it will be appreciated. Thanks.

Mr. Mike, I assume becasue of the Good Friday holiday, Tuttle was closed. I'll see what I can getRead More this week.

If the wife gave false information to the police she should of gotten lock up also because aRead More restraining order doesn't give you the right to report such false information that cause schools to get lock down.........................
Colleen April 12, 2013 at 12:40 pm
If there was a gun, a lockdown is warranted. If this is simply a violation of a restraining orderRead More in the immediate area of school(s) this is ridiculous. Evidently we are not getting the full story here.
SILENT WOLF April 12, 2013 at 02:23 am
Let's not all go into a frenzy, because someone is arguing and breaking a protective order aroundRead More or near a school. If he's welding a weapon near school grounds , that alone is grounds for a lock down , but I wonder if her story is just that a story.
Scott clark April 22, 2013 at 10:17 pm
Honestly it's sounds like you all need to get a life and stop pointing your finger at us at theRead More board of education and our renovation projects! You over opinionated drug addict alcoholic parents that like to act like you no better than the professionals! You parents r the reason that we don't push our teachers because we hate your kids and we do the bare minimum because no matter what we teach them they always turn out to be trash! So stop acting like anyone's really listening! We could careless! We will continue to smile and act like we care with a pat on the back while we say good Idea!! You intellectually challenged parents and "taxpayers" have never and never will no the difference!!
Mr Mike April 6, 2013 at 04:24 am
As proof of the decline in high school education, try giving a $1 item and a coupon for 10% off. IRead More know its 90 cents in my head, you most likely do also, but often the current crop(for past 10 years) of cashiers, age about 17-early 20s, needs a calculator or a register that does the calculation, to know what net cost is, before taxes!!!! Also, try giving them a $20 bill and 17 cents for a $15.17 item as shown on the register as the final total; they do not appear to comprehend that you do not want the 83 cents and four $1, you want one bill back $5! A sad state of affairs,
Joanne-Joe Belfiore April 5, 2013 at 10:00 pm
The school should concentrate on education not renovating the school. When a 60 is all you need toRead More pass High School that's pretty pathetic. We are just teaching the kids to get by in life. No hard work and learning skills. As long as they pass test and quizzes the kids pass. Never mind doing the classwork or homework.
Tom Bacha March 21, 2013 at 03:24 am
Excellent point Dan.Obviously all equipment should be in good working order. However, in a case ofRead More being trapped with the active shooter blocking the only exit/entrance and any other exit being locked, its futile for the occupants to run in different directions and create even more panic. People are called hero's for one reason and one reason only. They think clearly and follow a self directed plan, be it subconscious or pre- planned. There is no other option once hiding is negated by physical entrance into the room, other than confusing the shooter's attention in various ways such as throwing chairs, books etc while the teacher attempts to take possession of a weapon to defend the students. This may be futile for a number of reasons including that the teacher being mistakenly viewed as the top threat may be targeted first. Action and violent movement towards the threat by everyone at the same time is the only answer. This is the same approach used on airliners and the only way to eliminate the threat and thereby saving as many lives as possible. Think about that. Stopping the shooter at the door by taking out his legs by multiple people swarming him would stop the threat right there before he is allowed to move on to other rooms causing much, much more loss of life. Scary? Yes. Paramount to stop the threat? Yes. Anyone who claims students should continue to hide behind desks or lie on the floor is sadly misguided in my professional opinion. Action planning is the answer.

Yes it was a great drill. My daughter was in a classroom the gunman entered. Now here's the kicker.TheRead More door lock on the classroom was broken, the teacher couldn't lock the door.Yes if it was real the gunman could of shot though the door. But my daughter told me that during last year's code black a gunman entered the same classroom and the same door lock was broken. Can anyone explain WHY the door lock was never repaired. If this was real all the students and teacher are dead. Two years in a row.
Tom Bacha March 20, 2013 at 12:20 pm
I own a local Krav Maga school and I can tell you from years of training, the more realistic theRead More drills, the better our children have of surviving an extremely violent encounter. What we/they do within the first few seconds of the encounter sets the stage of events to happen. Adrenal Stress conditioning mimics as close as possible what happens to our body's central nervous system under extreme stress where lives hang in the balance of seconds. These drills should be done often and be very pointed in realistic threats that allow our loved ones experience, to know how to react properly. Example: we train with real metal knives and handguns that although they are not sharpened or loaded, feel and look real because they are. In the moment of adrenal dump (fight or flight response mechanism) our bodies must know how to react quickly and confidently. Most people are ignorant to this fact with the exception of law enforcement individuals (which I train). The more realistic, the better. One huge advantage is the students and teacher know its a drill and even what day it will happen. Real life scenarios aren't so kind....Tom

Voice of reason you can make all the assumptions you want in your self important mind but no I wouldRead More not be rushing to the school. I work in Emergency Preparedness and am quite aware of how these things work. Do not pretend to know me or what I would or would not do. Never did I say that I would be running to the school. Reading comprehension is your friend
Voice Of Reason March 16, 2013 at 12:55 am
J snell, You cannot listen to police radio they have gone digital encrypted. I would luv for themRead More to get rid of the Code Red system as Mayor Bob and I are going to have a major issue next time he calls my house at 7:15 am announcing a parking ban is in effect ,garbage is one day behind, and the Gov has closed the roads after I've been up to the wee hours of the morning clearing the snow! LOL Don't suggest unplugging my phone I have elderly inlaws. I didn't sign up for it either!
Voice Of Reason March 15, 2013 at 01:23 pm
Colleen since the Newtown incident this is a very sensitive issue and I have yet read the article onRead More Lockdown procedure and posting this comment but inclined to respond. I believe that it would be irresponsible of the Security Director (who even knew we had one good lord) to send out a Email stating a school is on lock down with no reason as to why! Imagine the phone calls they would have to field as to why it's on lockdown! I say that because should he put in the reason as to why in this case, SHOTS FIRED with NO explanation ? Imagine the hysteria ! I'd imagine for this particular incident that the Security Director would want a detailed explanation so it didn't bring worry and bring serious concern to parents. Were they a little behind in notification? Perhaps but better to have details on this incident in these very sensitive times with Shots Fired in a school zone. Just my opinion
Colleen March 14, 2013 at 07:23 pm
I think it is appropriate that parents of children in the school are notified about lockdowns thatRead More are not standard drills prior to or at the same time as the media. Emergency notifications take less than 5 minutes to craft and disseminate. Does not seem like much to ask in the wake of Newtown. Seeing it randomly on the Patch and not having received any information from the school regarding the issue is quite unsettling and certainly does not give me a sense of my children being secure.

http://www.schooldigger.com/go/CT/district/02640/search.aspx The link above will show NHS is 91stRead More out of 192 as of 8/12 in the mastery tests results. A lot of tax dollars have been spent over the years on NHS and as far as I can recall seeing in news, etc., not a lot of improvement has occurred. So, will all the new expenditures have a subtantial impact on NHS students ability in Math, Science, and in being better able to read/write/speak/comprehend ENGLISH as measured in the Mastery Tests and generally in needed life skills? Can the additional expenses/taxes be justified otherwise? Has this even been considered?

The plan calls for the addition of a second story on that end of the building which will include aRead More weight room and a dance studio. That addition should be largely complete by early 2013. Oh no, according to this, they are already behind schedule.

This may sound stupid to a lot of you out there...but in the warmer warmths I go back behind theRead More football field where there are some old palettes and catch (and release) milk snakes, lots of them....I am so worried they are going to mistake them for copperheads and kill them. It is a common mistake that is made. As a 57 year old retired woman that loves to catch snakes, that happens to be my favorite spot... and I hate to see the populations dwindle more..any suggestions on what I could do to save them would really be appreciated...Please. Any one know anyone in a higher office, like Wildlife Protection??

I'm a 1971 graduate from NHS, and have been living in Australia for 13 years. I teach piano atRead More Blackwood Music School, and most of my students are primary and secondary year students (years 1 -12). All public and private schools have uniforms, however, the students are allowed accessories that are not offensive. Some businesses also have uniforms or business logo shirts, my husband included in the business shirts, and I feel it is a wonderful thing. It keeps everyone on an equal footing. I remember my kids wanting expensive sneakers while growing out of them every few months because their friends had designer sneaks. Uniforms are neat and tidy, and promote the school that the student attends. Naugatuck should reconsider this issue, as a uniform with a greyhound logo would be awesome. I'd buy one and wear it while teaching my students. Cheers, Sandi Valiante Meaney
fkghnggkg March 6, 2013 at 10:39 pm
lol @ naugy parents! its not about what kids WANT to wear, its about what is appropriate. as aRead More teacher in town, specifically girls, dress as though they will screw anyone- (in which case, most girls do these days) its about learning that a dress code is to enforce the importance of learning and why the kids are at school- not for impressing others, putting others down, and showing that you're "easy" to get in bed at such a young age, even though studies show more than 50% of people lose virginity by age 16.
Naugatalk March 6, 2013 at 10:30 pm
Being over the 40 age catagory the clothes we wore to school would be considered uniform style.Read More Shirt with a collar pants with a belt and not showing your carpenters cleavage either ! No droopy drawers. And we wore shoes to school not sneakers except for gym. Just take a peek at the youth coming out of school theses days in town and I just wonder what the heck their parents were thinking sending their offspring to school looking like they're ready for a pole dance with the girls and the boys looking like they just escaped from a ghetto environment. Shame on the parents who voted down the uniform look. But then again look what mommy and daddy are wearing lately? ugh. get some class people. Another example fo dumming down here in town.

Thank you for reminding people about the importance of reading and talking with young children;Read More singing and talking about family life ( describing what is for supper, etc.) Read to Grow provides free new and gently used books to children of all ages . Families can apply inline at www.readtogrow.org. There is a family application and a program application. The most important thing one can do for children is to provide books to them so they have a healthy supply of books to practice their reading skills and to have good bonding time with parents and siblings as stories are read together. Really? An armed police officer? Whats next? National Guard tanks sitting at the parking lotRead More entrance? Maybe the police officers should try building a raptor of trust and respect with the children of our town before we go placing them on patrol in the schools with guns. Last summer as I sat in the parking lot of cumberland farms store there were a bunch of children, maybe 10 or so,sitting on their bikes outside the store drinking sodas. All of a sudden a police officer pulls in, rolls his window down and says to the children, "alright break it up, get movin on before I arrest you all for loitering." I was shocked! Here these kids were minding their own business and this officer takes the time out of his day to pull in and threaten our children with arrest! I got out of my car and said to him, "and just what are these kids doing wrong officer? wouldn't it have been a better to maybe just talk with these children?" He ignores me and drives off. To this day I kick myself for not getting his name but I was shocked and you just don't think in that situation.I don't have all the answers or claim to know what to do,and believe our children's safety is of utmost importance, but maybe we need to start with the way we treat people instead of putting guns in schools.
Carol Nardini February 17, 2013 at 06:38 pm
I don't agree. Students need a break after being in school all day. A period of recreation,Read More preferably physical, would be better than starting homework right away. This solution worked for this student, but not for all.
