'Season of '42' a Tale of War and Baseball

Cavanaugh shares his latest book with Naugatuck audience.

NAUGATUCK — Jack Cavanaugh was going to be late. An auto accident on Route 8 was backing up traffic and preventing the author of Season of ’42: Joe D, Teddy Ballgame, and Baseball’s Fight to Survive a Turbulent First Year of War from keeping his 6:30 p.m. speaking date Wednesday evening at the Whittemore Memorial Library in Naugatuck. It was worth the wait. When he finally began his presentation, at about 7 p.m. or so, Cavanaugh was vintage Cavanaugh. Erudite, clear and occasionally humorous. After describing his trip through the Naugatuck Valley as a “sentimental journey” – he began his journalistic career as a Valley correspondent for the New Haven Register in the mid-1950s – Cavanaugh told the assemblage about his latest literary effort…

"This is Beyond a Bad Idea!"

From a rash of home burglaries to the potential regionalization of emergency communications, Patch account-holders share their take on the day's news.

Middlebury "I need a bigger dog," Leenie Beattie Smith said on our Facebook page, when she learned that police are warning residents in regard to a recent rash of home burglaries. North Branford "This is beyond a bad idea!" john carter turns to his knowledge of how things work on the emergency communications front in a neighboring town to share his opinion about North Branford's possible regionalization. East Haven "The judicial system needs to start taking animal abuse crimes much more seriously." That's what Lesley Simoni (EH Animal Shelter volunteer) says in response to news that the Branford man who allegedly killed his dog was previously arrested on charges that he strangled his ex-girlfriend.

I Am Mom Enough

In this first of a series, the author examines the intersection of hyper-parenting and feminism. Where do we go from here?

In another shocking example of poor journalistic judgment, the current Time magazine cover of an attractive mother breastfeeding her three year old son stoked intense debate among mothers across the nation just in time for Mother’s Day. The cover, reading “Are you Mom enough?” invites the reader to learn about the unorthodox childcare advice administered by longtime parenting guru Dr. William Sears. Dr. Sears, who recommends a technique called attachment parenting, advises a host of techniques designed to foster — he says — a safe and secure childrearing environment. The attachment parenting mother breastfeeds on demand until the child self-weans, sometimes not until kindergarten. The mother wears the young baby in a sling — nearly all day…

Also, I am optimistic that my son has learned this over the years living in our household and will not use the word "help" towards his future wife/partner when doing household chores and child care!   more ›

Bear vs. Man: Your Thoughts

Patch readers weigh in on the killing of a black bear, pedestrian safety and pensions.

Cheshire "And would the DEP charge the black bear with murder if the bear killed this man's family? Is this man really a criminal for killing the bear?" Chris Cioffi poses these questions in response to the arrest of a Burlington man for killing a black bear that came onto his property. Stratford "People need to slow down for a few minutes and pay attention." This, jmf says, will lead to safer streets for pedestrians. The comment is one of many as residents discuss the fact that there have been seven pedestrians struck by vehicles so far this year — three shy of the number for all of 2011. Hamden "You don't have to be an accountant to figure this one out..." Dr. Alfred C. Whitehead diagnosis the problem and provides a prescription to …

This is an interesting "story" about a man getting arrested for misdemeanor bear shooting. Or is it a non-story about an idiot who uses his illegal pistol, not even in self defense, and then hands it over to police who promptly arrest him for felony possession of a pistol? You decide...   more ›

Mother Knows Breast

Here we go again — the real issue at the center of any debate over 'modern motherhood' is exploitation.

You don’t want to look at it, but you can’t look away. God forbid your children see it, what will happen when they view such a corruptible, sensational image?! Oh my, it’s a breast! With a child old enough to walk, talk and ask for food attached to it. A child doing what children are meant to do. Getting attention.  That’s right, the biggest — perhaps only — winners in this cover story on breastfeeding and attachment parenting are Time magazine’s publicity, marketing and circulation departments. That’s what the cover image was designed to do: Get attention. And it has gotten lots of attention. Blogs, news websites, network news shows... you name it, everyone has weighed in on the 'controversial' articles and accompanying photos. It's been …

Lou: I am one of those mothers who tried to breastfed for two months with my first baby....Doctor said "give it time" but make supplemental bottles so the baby will be satisfied. After 8 weeks of this nonsense, I cried myself to sleep and went to formula. That baby is now a strapping man in his forties, athletic and healthy...so there lol! I am so sick and tired of the media making any mother who…   more ›

"Or pizza place or bank!!!" adds Marilyn Raines. "Or liquor store!" chimes in Cindi Anthony Lerner. Milford "Let's face it, pay phones are as obsolete as cassette tapes and VCRs." Rich offers this observation into modern living in response to a community discussion about the diminishing presence of public telephones in Milford. Stratford "This picture is absolutely appalling. And with her pose it almost borders on perversion!" That's what Heidi Ernst Manente thinks of the cover of Time magazine featuring a 3-year-old breast feeding. She shareds her thoughts on…

'Sounds Like Another Way for Government to Raise Money'

Patch account-holders weigh in on the day's news, from a proposed increase in fines to a major accident that injured more than a dozen people.

Oxford "I'm surprised the free traders haven't suggested making them cheaper in China." A comment from Will Wilkin about Canada's decision to stop printing certain currency and if the U.S. may follow suit with pennies. Southbury "Sounds like another way for Government to raise money." That's what RU Kidding thinks of proposal to increase the fine for ordinance violations from $150 total to $150 per day. East Haven "Just another person not paying attention." Should The U.S. Stop Making The Penny? [Poll]

Canada just minted its last one-cent piece. Should the United States follow suit? Take our poll and add your thoughts in the comments.

Canada produced its last penny on Friday - the government said it was too expensive to make and had become obsolete, Bloomberg reported. “The real issue was that people weren’t using them, they were putting them in jars at home, and we were doing the same thing at my house,” Finance Minister Jim Flaherty said. He spoke at the Royal Canadian Mint in Winnipeg, Manitoba, before pushing a button that stamped the last one-cent coin, Bloomberg said.     U.S. officials have bene talking about dropping the penny for some time. There are pros and cons. What do you think? Do we need the penny? Do you use the penny? How big is your jar of pennies? What's your favorite saying involving the word 'penny'? How about songs (scroll down to 'P')?

Not only should the penny be discontinued, but the $1 bill costs U.S. taxpayers about 35-40 million dollars a year. Coins are a much smarter and economical way to go.   more ›

'Think Before You Hit Enter'

Patch account-holders weigh in on the day's news, from a town's budget approval to online comments.

Woodbury-Middlebury "Marriage should only be between opposite sexes!" That's what Ric Vargoshe thinks about President Obama's announcement that he supports Americans' right to gay marriage. Naugatuck "...he (or she) appears to be one of those rare individuals who enjoys paying higher taxes." Don Carten is not. He prefers lower taxes, he says, in regard to a subcommittee's statement that it's recommending the town contract with an ambulance company whose bid came in $200,000 less than another company. Stratford "Count on my vote flushing many incumbents 'down the drain' next election." max casts his ballot upon learning of the town's budget approval. East Haven "Think before you hit 'enter'. You're representing not just yourself, but your …

Subcommittee Issues Statement on Ambulance Selection

Interviews, selection held in public to "keep the process of this decision as open and transparent as possible," the Naugatuck chairman said.

On May 9, 2012, after ten months of meetings, research, ride alongs, tours and bid drafting, review and interviews of the bidders, the Naugatuck EMS committee reached a decision of an EMS provider for the Borough of Naugatuck. After careful review of the two bids received: Naugatuck Ambulance bid at $296,000.00 and Campion Ambulance Service Inc. bid at $96,000.00, Campion was unanimously voted by the Committee as the recommended EMS provider for the period of July 1, 2012 through June 30, 2013. Dispatch service was not included in the bid, in an attempt to create an equitable and fair bidding environment to all bidders. It is planned that dispatch services will be bid out separately. The process of interviewing of both bidders was held in …

All. Lets put this in perspective. It comes down to dollars and cents. Naugatuck Ambulance is a Not for profit agency who must cover the costs operations. The $296,000.00 Bid does not come close to the true cost of running a EMS service. The true figures are offset by Patient Billing. Insurance for those who have it and those who don't who do pay there bill. There needs to be a understanding of …   more ›
