The Naugatuck school district releases information on where Central Avenue students will be going in the 2012-13 school year.
Parents of students at Central Avenue School are being notified this week which of the K-4 schools their children will be heading to in the next school year. Superintendent John Tindall-Gibson said the district sent out letters to the parents on Wednesday informing Central Avenue families that the redistricting process is under way. The Board of Education voted 7-2 to close Central Avenue School next year and reappropriate the building into a less-expensive early learning center. The move is said to save nearly $1 million, as the borough finds ways to save money while dealing with anticipated spending increases. According to a map of the redistricting, available on Mayor Robert Mezzo's blog, Central Avenue students will be reassigned to …

Extra state funding, however, would go toward programs and not teachers, the school chief said.
With the recent passage of an education reform bill, Naugatuck is among 30 communities in Connecticut that will share in $39.5 million in extra state funding in the upcoming fiscal year. But the $635,000 in increased Education Cost Sharing funding likely won't be put toward hiring new borough teachers or reestablishing positions for the seven K-4 teachers who were handed pink slips over the past few weeks, Superintendent John Tindall-Gibson said Thursday evening. Rather, the funding would have to be put toward specific programs that would help underperforming school districts, like Naugatuck. The program initiatives include reform strategies, extended learning time or strengthened reading programs for elementary students, according to a …

Glenn Lungarini, the assistant principal at Oxford High School, was hired by the Board of Education in Seymour by a vote of 8-0 Monday.
Anyone who spends enough time at Oxford High School is bound to run into Assistant Principal/Athletic Director Glenn Lungarini. He’s at the school early in the morning greeting students and often remains at the building until late in the evenings for athletic events, at which he often leads the Pledge of Allegiance and announces the names of players from both teams. But Lungarini will no longer be a familiar face inside the walls of the young Oxford High School, where he has been second-in-command since the building opened to students in the fall of 2007. That’s because Lungarini is seizing an opportunity to become a building principal in neighboring Seymour. Late Monday evening, the Seymour Board of Education voted 8-0 to hire Lungarini …

The Rev. Michael Slusz, who has served as pastor at St. Francis of Assisi parish in Naugatuck for nearly a decade, resigned from his post last week. The announcement of Slusz’ departure came Sunday to parishioners at the downtown Catholic Church, where Slusz was first assigned in 2003 after finishing his education in the seminary. Slusz officially resigned as pastor of St. Francis on May 1, the Archdiocese of Hartford said. The former pastor issued a short letter to the parishioners during the weekend Masses containing the announcement, and thanking them for the generous support that he’s received since he first came to Naugatuck nine years ago. “From the moment I first arrived, I have felt welcome in the parish,” the letter read. “I thank…

Police say the youths were trying to practice "free running."

Police said officers responded to NHS just before 5 p.m. on May 3 after getting a report of a group of teenagers running along the roof. A custodian had already detained the teens when police arrived, reported Lt. Robert Harrison, Naugatuck police spokesman. A group of four 16-year-olds, and one 17-year-old, were taken into custody on charges of third-degree criminal trespass, police said. The teens told investigating officers they were trying to practice the sport of “free running,” Harrison said.
