Hillside Intermediate School

Given to the borough of Naugatuck in 1905 by philanthropist John Howars Whittemore, Hillside Intermediate School beganMore as the original Naugatuck High School until the current high school was built in 1959. The building is one of Naugatuck's more historic structures, designed by the famous architectural firm McKim, Mead and White. "Home of the Eagles," the Hillside Intermediate School educates children in grades 5 and 6. The school offers academic courses in math, science, English and history, as well as extracurricular activities including band, music and physical education. The current principal is Johnna Hunt. Hillside Covenant Church

Hillside Covenant Church, a member of the broader Evangelical Covenant Church, sits atop the western part ofMore Naugatuck's town center, just across from the intersection with Hillside Avenue and the Hillside Intermediate School. Hillside Covenant Church was organized as the Swedish Evangelical Bethany Congregation (Church) in Naugatuck in 1894.</p> <p>The denomination recognizes but transcends theological differences through sharing a common life in Jesus Christ.  Hillside welcomes all in Christian fellowship to "Pray-Worship-Serve." The church ministers towards spiritual growth through prayer, Christian education, worship, community outreach and missions.  </p> <p>Hillside Covenant Church hosts church and community related events, such as The Alpha Program, Reach-Out Ministries, the monthly New England Roast Beef or Baked Bean Supper, and is a sponsor of Naugatuck’s New Beginnings Program. Their Fellowship Hall is a meeting site for Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous.  The pastor is Rev. Liz Leggett. Allen DeFerrari has been Hillside’s organist for 50 years. Naugatuck High School

Naugatuck High School was completed in 1959 after being relocated to its present location from what is now HillsideMore Middle School. This school instructs nearly 1,400 students in math, science, social studies, history, English and language. Students are also offered a chance to take advanced placement courses, and are required to test in the state-mandated CAPT testing process.</p> <p>Naugatuck High School has a long tradition in football, particularly in its Thanksgiving Day rival game against Ansonia High School. The rivalry game stretches back 109 years.</p>

Salem Elementary School
124 Meadow St, Naugatuck, CT 06770

Built in 1893, Salem Elementary School is the oldest operating school in Naugatuck. Bequeathed to the town by JohnMore Howard Whittemore, who also funded the Hillside Middle School and Howard Whittemore Library among others, Salem has supported grades K-4 since around 1950.</p> <p>Children at this downtown school are instructed in a curriculum that includes math, science, language arts and social studies. Because of its central location, Salem School students will spend some of their instructional time outside the school walls, visiting the Naugatuck Historical Society, the Howard Whittemore Library and the firehouse. The mayor and the local state representative also come to the school and read to the students.</p> <p>The school's Flag Day ceremony is also a well-attended event, known among Naugatuck residents.
