Given to the borough of Naugatuck in 1905 by philanthropist John Howars Whittemore, Hillside Intermediate School beganMore as the original Naugatuck High School until the current high school was built in 1959. The building is one of Naugatuck's more historic structures, designed by the famous architectural firm McKim, Mead and White. "Home of the Eagles," the Hillside Intermediate School educates children in grades 5 and 6. The school offers academic courses in math, science, English and history, as well as extracurricular activities including band, music and physical education. The current principal is Johnna Hunt. Initiated in 1893 with three sworn officers, and their chief, Chief George D. Hosford, the Naugatuck PoliceMore Department is currently staffed with 59 full-time officers. The department, which responds to an average of 33,000 calls a year, consists of three divisions: patrol, investigation and administration. There is also a bureau for juvenile matters.</p> <p>The department has had 14 chiefs since its inception over a century ago. The current chief is Chief Christopher J. Edson, who has served his post since 2007 and the deputy chief is Thomas Hunt. The records bureau provides information on past incidents.</p>
