St. Vincent Ferrer Church

St. Vincent Ferrer Church was established when the archbishop of Hartford mandated that the other parish in town, St.More Francis of Assisi, create a mission church on the other side of the Naugatuck River. The church's patron saint, Vincent Ferrer, was a missionary of English and Scottish descent, who converted thousands throughout Europe in the 14th and early 15th centuries.</p> <p>The parish hosts a number of programs, including a Holy Name Society, Ladies Guild and Knights of Columbus. All teachers at the center are required to have a Bachelors Degree, an Associates Degree or a Child Development Associate certification. The Hop Brook Elementary School, a K-4 school centered just near Route 68, carries a great deal of architecturalMore history, much like other major buildings in the borough of Naugatuck. It was completed in 1916, when it was known as Union City School, by renowned female architect Theodate Pope Riddle. Cross Street Intermediate School was, for decades, a elementary school that served children from the kindergarten toMore 5th grade. The district reconfigured in 2002 and Cross Street became an intermediate school for grades 5 and 6, although it is technically still classified as an elementary school through the state.</p> <p>The school offers instruction in math, language and sciences among other faculties. Students partake in several programs, including DARE, programs presented by the National Guard, charity for the victims of Hurricane Katrina, "Hats for Haiti" and donations to the Naugatuck Ecumenical Food Bank.</p> <p>The current principal is Christopher Montini.
