New Stop Signs Coming to a Borough Intersection

The Naugatuck Police Commission approved the implementation of stop signs at the corner of Bird Road and Spruce Drive.

The Naugatuck Police Commission approved Tuesday the placement of two new stop signs at an intersection of a pair of borough side streets.

The commission voted unanimously during a meeting at the to put new signs at the point where Bird Road and Spruce Drive meet. The two quiet residential streets are located in the eastern part of Naugatuck, off of May Street.

Initially, the commission had discussed potentially putting a “Slow — Children Playing” sign at the corner, however after conducting a traffic study, Deputy Chief Joshua Bernegger recommended the stop signs instead.

In explaining his reasoning, Bernegger mentioned how some residents were concerned about safety in the area. The traffic study showed there was also some limited sight distance in the neighborhood where those roads met, the deputy chief said.

Commission Chairman Steven Smith also mentioned the residents that filed the complaint have grandchildren that play in the area who also get on, and off, the school bus near that intersection. While there were calls for greater safety there, Smith noted that there wasn’t any mention of major accidents in the traffic study.

Now, because there already is one stop sign at that intersection, the new intersection will now be a three-way stop.
