Printing Error Gives Thousands of Naugatuck Voters Wrong Info

Town registrar says 18,000 mailers were issued last week, incorrectly telling residents the place where they vote in elections has changed.

A total of 18,000 light green mailer cards — informing Naugatuck residents what polling location they are to vote at during primaries and elections — were sent out to borough residents last week.

Every single card, however, is incorrect, said Democratic Registrar Louise Sheedy.

Sheedy said on Monday the company that printed the cards made a mistake and incorrectly informed borough residents that their polling locations have changed when they actually haven't.

“(The company) is taking full responsibility, and new cards will be mailed out,” Sheedy said. The new cards should be coming by the end of this week, and the re-issued cards should contain the accurate polling locations.

As an example, according to the incorrect cards, residents who usually vote in one location, say , were told to vote in another place on the other side of town, like , Sheedy said.

Initially, Sheedy said she thought it was her staff that might have incorrectly informed the printing company. But after checking their data, they realized they submitted the proper information.

She declined to state the company’s name, but noted that the printing company owned up to the mistake and notified the borough about the issue.

“They requested that we didn’t (name them),” Sheedy said.

Plus, Sheedy said, there will be no extra cost to Naugatuck taxpayers to have the cards reprinted. She also said the company will print a note on the new cards explaining the error.

But, there are some residents who will be reporting to different polling locations this year — if they choose to vote in the April 24 Republican primary or on Election Day in November.

This is because, after the 2010 census results came out, local Democratic and Republican town committee leaders .

The is no longer a polling place.

But, Sheedy said there was no rush in getting the cards out. Work was done back in January to get the lines redrawn and everything was moving at a normal pace, from the borough’s perspective, she said.

“We just wanted them to go out after the redistricting… and before the April 24 primary,” Sheedy said.

Before the next batch of cards are sent out, however, a proof will be sent over to the , Sheedy said.

Editor's Note: We previously stated that the mailers were "yellow." This is incorrect. The mailers were light green. We've since corrected the error.
