Naugatuck Legend Passes Over the Weekend

Edward Mariano, a former Naugatuck educator, principal and coach, has died at age 88.

Naugatuck lost a hometown legend on Sunday. Mr. Ed Mariano, a former standout athlete, NHS basketball coach, physical education teacher and longtime Andrew Avenue School principal who served in World War II, passed at age 88.

On top of that, he was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was known to support many local youth activities and civic organizations.

We send our condolences to the family and many friends that Mr. Mariano leaves behind. May he rest in peace.

Note: We plan to bring you more local and family reaction to his passing later today. For now, we want to leave you with this column about Mr. Mariano. It was originally published in Naugatuck Patch on June 27, 2011.
