Hospital: 24-Year-Old Fall Victim Has Died

A 24-year-old Stratford man fell out of a window after an assault at 8 Pond St. in Naugatuck last week, police say.

Update at 11:29 a.m. Saturday

A spokesman for Waterbury Hospital has confirmed that 24-year-old Salomon Martinez has died.

Spokesman Matt Burgard confirmed the news with Naugatuck Patch Saturday morning.

Martinez has been kept alive on a breathing apparatus but was believed to have no brain function after falling from the fourth floor of an apartment at 8 Pond St. in Naugatuck on Dec. 6.

Two men have been charged with assaulting Martinez and causing him to fall out the window, and police said they will likely face stronger charges in the coming days.

Those who have been arrested are Matthew Chandler, 20, of 24 Myrtle Ave., Naugatuck, and Kyle Gonzalez, 20, of 10 Anderson St., Naugatuck. They are imprisoned in lieu of separate $500,000 bonds. They have been charged with first-degree assault and conspiracy to commit first-degree assault. They are expected to appear at Waterbury Superior Court on Jan. 30.

Police say the incident occurred after a night of heavy drinking at the apartment on Pond Street, a small side road off of Rubber Avenue. A police report states that a fight broke out after a game of beer pong, a binge drinking game. Police say they found blood stains in the apartment and glass all over the floor. Witnesses said Martinez smashed a large aquarium and hit a woman on the head with a computer monitor during the night. Police said they still do not know exactly how Martinez ended up going out the window, but they have reason to believe Gonzalez and Chandler are responsible. Police say they are not being cooperative with the investigation.

Lt. Bryan Cammarata, Naugatuck Police spokesman, has told Patch that, "Ultimately, what it's going to come down to is the only possible way (Martinez) went out the window is because of a scuffle in the apartment. He was either pushed out or he jumped out because he was trying to escape these guys. At no time did they try to help him."

Police were called to the apartment at 2:27 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 16, for a report of a fall victim. When police arrived to the multi-family house, Martinez was laying on the ground in a pool of blood, police say.

Sad to read this on all fronts. 24 year old father now dead and 2 20 year old men facing some SERIOUS charges and likely jail time over this. They'll be facing manslaughter charges at a minimum now that he died. All because of a beer pong game??- how truly sad for everybody involved.

While it's horrible this man died, being forced out the window (per this article), let's not forget that he too was a part of this, what kind of man smashes a computer over a woman's head? Let's look at the real problem, a bunch of minors and young adults boozing it up on a Tuesday night... Do they not work? Are they in school? Why was the homeowner allowing a minor to drink at their home? What kind of parent is out on a Tuesday night binge drinking? (Let's face it beer pong= binge drinking.) Why was this man left on his own, where were his friends? Why did no one follow these men upstairs to try to defuse the situation? If blood was being shed and personal property damaged why were the police not called? These are all things to think about.. EVERYONE involved was at fault for what is now what I would believe as involuntary manslaughter (if he did indeed fall out). The newest generation of young adults are hot headed, have entitlement issues, are selfish, obviously have poor judgement skills (look at who they keep as friends) and are irresponsible, what as a society will we do about that? This whole situation could have been easily avoided in MANY ways!

Everyone who was there that night has to be questioned to the fullest extent possible to come to the truth of what really happen .There is a penalty for anyone who knows someone is injured or dying and ignores the situation. Therefore many others ought to be arrested as well...

Most of what you say I agree with . However not the part ,where you speak of the new generation , I believe most of our new generation don"t deserve to be describe that way, but I would agree many are .and your frustration with society I'm with you on that.

He was a friend of a friend, sad on all accounts for everyone, we all had drinking parties that got out of hand when we were young....but, I must say this apt has had more of it's share of visits from the police.....R.I.P young man...

Very tragic story! R.I.P

Sal would not have jumped out the window to get away from anyway. no less a 4th floor window. Sal was not a stupid guy. And have you seen the size of the two that allegedly pushed him out the window. They are 20 years old and tiny. Someones not talking because it is highly unlikely that two scrawny 20 year olds pushed a 24 6foot something man out the window. Something is not right here. Speak up "friends"

Like I posted...thst apt has had more of it's share of police visits, almost every weekend. Something should definitely be done about the person that lives there and allows this crap to go on every weekend....now it has gotten way out of hand and gone much too far to be to ignored. When is the community going to step up and do something about it?? Well said Silent Wolf..love your posts always.

Did anybody ask them selfs how drunk was sal? Was he on drugs?why wasnt he home with his daughter?if he was such a great guy why was he smashing glass and computers over a girls head? And did the drugs and liquer make him lose his mind to do all this and lead him to jumping out a window? Maybe he had no idea what floor he was on ? Because he was bindge drinking right ? Its real sad what happend but at this point nobody should be pointing fingers there was not one witness that saw anyone pushing him!
Cheryl Cuff January 29, 2013 at 02:25 AM
no but there is a witness who was being beat by one or both of them and Sal came to his defence. Also witness that says Sal was not playing that game of beer pong.

I have asked myself those very questions, three young lives are destroyed, not one...no one knoews the truth and I hope it comes out. This man was a friend of a friend, but I did wonder why he was drinking with a group of underage kids. at 24 he should have known better. Like I said It is tragic all around, for all involved, I am sure the detectives will factor in that he assaulted a young women and he could have killed her...being smashed over the head with an aquarium is no joke, then hit in the face with computer monitor. The bigger picture is this young woman that allows these things to go on in her apt weekend after weekend, the police are there quite often, (I know because I live very close by). There should be some accountability on her side too!!
