Update: Rubber Ave. Supposed to be Reopened This Morning

A gas leak was reported near 758 Rubber Ave. Tuesday.

Updated at 5 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22

Yankee Gas was expected to have Rubber Avenue opened this morning after a gas closed closed a section of it for much of the day Tuesday.

The leak was reported at 8 a.m. near Elks Lodge No. 967 at 758 Rubber Ave.

Yankee Gas was on scene directing drivers through Mountview Plaza after the leak was discovered coming from storm drains.

No buildings or homes in the mainly commercial area had to be evacuated.

Naugatuck Police spokesman Bryan Cammarata said the road was closed from its intersection with Neumann Street to its intersection with Woodruff Street. He said it was expected to be closed until at least 10 o'clock Tuesday night.

Naugatuck Fire Chief Ken Hanks said: "We were getting very high readings in the parking lot of the Elks Club that indicated if you lit a match, it would have ignited."
