Auditions Announced for 'The Sound of Music' by Castle Craig Players

Castle Craig Players will present THE SOUND OF MUSIC from May 30 – June 8 at The Almira F. Stephan Memorial Playhouse in Meriden.

AUDITION DATES:
Saturday March 15th 12:00 – 3:00 – Children only
Sunday March 16th 6:00 – 8:00 – Adults only
Monday March 17th 7:00 – 9:00 – Adults only

ADULT SINGING ROLES: Please prepare 16 bars of a vocal selection from The Sound of Music for your audition. We have listed suggestions below. Our Music Director will have the sheet music. Please be prepared to sing at least one verse of the song. Lyrics and recordings are available online (check YouTube). You may be asked to read from the script.

ADULT NON-SINGING ROLES: Please expect to read from the script – you do not need to prepare a monologue

CHILDREN: Please prepare one of the following songs from the show: Do Re Mi, My Favorite Things or The Lonely Goatherd. Our Music Director will have the sheet music. Please be prepared to sing at least one verse of the song. Lyrics and recordings are available online (check YouTube). Please be prepared to read from the script, and possibly do a small movement/dance combination (if time permits).

Rehearsals will begin March 24th, and will be held Sundays 2:00 – 6:00, Mondays, Wednesdays, & Thursdays 7:00 – 9:00 - with a few exceptions for holidays. Not everyone will be called for every rehearsal. Please bring your calendar to the auditions so you can note any conflicts at that time.

SOUND OF MUSIC Character Breakdown

Maria Rainer (Soprano, 20s-early 30s) A postulant at Nonnberg Abbey – young, free spirited, warm, gentle and kind with much determination. *Ability to play guitar a plus, but not required*

Captain Georg von Trapp (Baritone, 35-50) A retired Austrian naval captain. Polished, yet very military in the way he runs his life to repress his sadness over the death of his wife; underneath, he is warm, understanding, and determined. *Ability to play guitar a plus, but not required*

Baroness Elsa Schrader (Mezzo Soprano, early 30s-40s) A baroness of taste and elegance, sophisticated, dignified and mature.

Max Detweiller (Tenor/Baritone, 30+) Charming and vital; a man of sophistication who enjoys the good life; true and loyal friend to the von Trapp family.

Mother Abbess (Legit Soprano, wide vocal range, 40+) Motherly, understanding, strong and authoritative, but kind.
(Suggested song: Climb Every Mountain)

Sister Berthe (Alto) Mistress of Novices, prudish, straight laced with a quick tongue, she is less tolerant than other nuns.

Sister Margaretta (Mezzo) Mistress of Postulants, very kind, understanding and concerned.

Sister Sophia (Soprano) Neither demanding nor critical, sticks with the rules.
(Suggested song: How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?)

Rolf Gruber (Tenor/Baritone, late teens-20s) Suitor to Liesl, telegram delivery boy, later Nazi soldier. A very pleasant young man, somewhat aggressive but in a gentle way.

The Children of Captain Von Trapp: Children must be able to play the listed age, but do not necessarily have to be so. All must be strong singers and actors, and move well. All children must be mature, experienced and responsible as actors, and able to handle themselves with minimal supervision through the rehearsal and performance process.
- Liesl (mezzo, 16) The oldest child with a maternal edge to her, becoming a young lady.

- Friedrich (age 14) Tough exterior, very much trying to be “the man” of the family.

- Louisa (age 13) Rebellious attitude.

- Kurt (age 10) Gentle and mischievous.

- Brigitta (age 9) Smart, reads a lot.

- Marta (age 7/8) Very sweet and gentle.

- Gretl (age 6/7) Must have the cute factor.

Franz (non-singing, 30+) The von Trapp butler, rather formal but not without spirit, he is very German and loyal to the Fascist cause.

Frau Schmidt (non-singing, 30+) The housekeeper, stoic, very little personality; she does her job efficiently but without affection. Strong and somewhat dominating.

Herr Zeller (non-singing, 40+) Stern and unsmiling, a typical Nazi official whose primary concern is to see that everyone toes the line.

Nuns – (various ages) All must sing well and be able to learn harmonies. There are several a capella songs of a liturgical nature requiring strong singers. (Suggested songs: Sound of Music, Do Re Mi, My Favorite Things, Edelweiss, Climb Every Mountain)

Party Guests – (men & women – various ages) non singing roles.

Salzburg citizens – (men & women – various ages) non singing roles.

Festival Contestants – (men & women – various ages) non singing roles.
