Connecticut High School Music Theatre Award Nominations Announced

The nominees for the Connectiut High School Musical Theater Awards were announced Sunday, May 19 at noon.

For the fifth year, The Spirit of Broadway Theater in Norwich, CT, is proud to present The Connecticut High School Musical Theater Awards, a black tie gala event that celebrates arts in our schools and recognizes individual artistry in vocal, dance and acting performances by high school students.

As the nationally designated, high school musical theater awards program for the State, The Connecticut High School Musical Theater Awards are connected with The National High School Musical Theater Award Program based in NYC. The recipients of the Outstanding Actor and Actress awards will travel to NYC, where they will join peers selected from other similar State program across the country for the annual presentation of The Jimmy Awards.

This year 26 high schools from across the state participated. Winners of the outstanding actor and actress of the Connecticut awards will participate in a five-day intensive “Broadway boot camp” in New York and then compete nationally at a ceremony to be held July 1 at 7:30 p.m. at Broadway's Minskoff Theatre.

The Waterbury Arts Magnet School's production of In the Heights was nominated for Outstanding Musical Direction by John Mobilio and Outstanding Chorus. Amity High School's presentation of Sweeney Todd received a total of 13 nominations, tying with Ridgefield High School. The production of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying put on by Newtown High received eight nominations, including Outstanding Lead Actor Taylor Varga and Outstanding Production of the Year.

Congratulations to all the nominees.

The Connecticut High School Musical Theater Awards will be held Tuesday, June 4 at 6 p.m. at Waterbury's Palace Theater.
