TRINITY TO OFFER CHORAL EVENSONG AND DRAMATIC READING

TORRINGTON, CT – 5 MARCH 2014: On Sunday, March 16, Trinity Episcopal Church, 220 Prospect Street, Torrington, CT, will offer Evensong and a Dramatic Reading at 7:30 PM.

The Evensong will include settings of the evening canticles composed by Trinity organist and choirmaster Dr. Jerry F Davidson as well as readings of the Holy Scriptures, prayers appointed for the day and congregational hymns. The event will take place in the beautiful Nave of Trinity Episcopal Church, led by the accomplished choir and accompanied by the renowned 57 rank Austin organ.

Immediately following the brief liturgy, a group of talented and locally known performers will present a dramatic reading from Dorothy Sayers’ drama, "The Man Born to be King.”

Written and produced to great acclaim by the BBC in the height of World War II, the British critic Sheldon Vanauken (A Severe Mercy) said of Sayers’ piece, “… the Gospels come alive. Her Jesus can bring tears to your eyes. You will be deeply moved--a powerful experience.”

Ms. Sayers was the author of extremely popular mystery novels featuring her sleuth, Lord Peter Whimsy. She also was part a group which called itself "The Inklings," consisting of Sayers, J. R. R. Tolkien, C. S. Lewis, and Charles Williams who met weekly at an Oxford pub to hear and comment upon readings from each other's works.

Choral Evensong is one of the most beautiful services in the Episcopal tradition and is celebrated daily in the great Cathedrals and University establishments in England.
