Naugatuck Railroads

There are many things that define Naugatuck; the rubber and chemical factories, Peter Paul, the Naugatuck River, and the topography that has us either going up hill or down hill, are a few quick examples.

One of my favorites is the railroad.  The Naugatuck Railroad stared in the late 1800's and was major part of the industrial growth of Naugatuck.  At one time we had two railroads in town, one running north and south (current line) and another running east to west. Naugatuck has also had 8 railroad stations, 9 if you count the stop on Water St separate from the old station that is home of the Historical Society.  The only rail service now is the Metro-North commuter line.

The photo is one I took a few years ago from the bridge between Bridge Street and Prospect Street, looking towards Big Y.  The train is an Amtrak P-40 on lease to Metro North.   I attempted to show motion using a blur filter in Photoshop.
