Obituary: George A. Sabo Dies at 87

World War II veteran and former Prospect mayor.

PROSPECT — George A. Sabo, Jr., 87, of Prospect, passed away peacefully at his home May 9, 2012 with his loving wife, Shirley (Matijosaitis) and children around him. 

George was born May 19, 1924 in Waterbury, the son of George A. Sabo Sr. and Alice (Wrynn) Sabo. He was a resident of Prospect since 1938 and was a communicant of St. Anthony Church.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the 3110th Signal Service Battalion credited in the Normandy, Northern France and Ardennes-Alsace Campaigns. After completing his service he worked for Southern New England Telephone Company as a cable splicer.

Always committed to public service, he left SNET to become the town of Prospect’s first full time executive officer a role he held for 10 years, a first as Chief Executive Officer and then Mayor. He also worked in the Department of Economic Development of State of Connecticut, helping Connecticut small business and industry. He was the founder and President of Highland Greens Golf Course in Prospect, Connecticut and President of Samarius Precision Instruments in Wallingford.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Shirley.  He leaves 7 children and their families: Virginia Sabo and husband Dr. Roberto Romero of Grosse Pointe, Michigan; Katherine Blinstrubas and husband, Peter of Prospect; Elizabeth Sabo of New York City; Thomas Sabo and his wife, Tami of Wallingford; George A. Sabo, III and his wife Erika of Cheshire; Anne Murphy and  husband, Edward of Middletown, R.I.; and Alice Sabo and her partner, A. Mark Berlin Jr., of Wayzata, Minn.

He leaves 12 grandchildren: Matthew, Samuel, Thomas, and James Blinstrubas; Rachel, Katherine, and Caroline Sabo; Edward, Hugh, John, and Virginia Murphy; and Joseph Sabo. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews, including Beverly Allen of Prospect.

George was predeceased by 2 infant children, George and Mary Alice, as well as brothers, Robert and Eugene and sister, Virginia.

A funeral with full military honors will be held on Saturday, May 12, 2012 at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony’s Church, 4 Union City Rd, Prospect. Family and friends are asked to meet directly at the church.  Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Friends may call at the Buckmiller Brothers Funeral Home, 26 Waterbury Rd, Rte. 69 Prospect on Friday evening from 4-7 p.m.
