Obituary: Naugatuck Man, and WWII Veteran, Gerard McCabe Dies at 90

NAUGATUCK — Gerard J. “Jerry” McCabe, age 90, of 120 Beacon Manor Road, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 5, 2011, at his home sur rounded by his family. He was husband of the late Helen (Makowski) McCabe for 57 years. Mr. McCabe was born Oct. 29, 1920, in Brooklyn, N.Y., son of the late Thomas and Mary (Morton) Mc-Cabe. He had lived most of his life in Nau gatuck, and he had retired in 1980 from Uniroyal Inc. after many years of service.

Jerry served his country in the United States Marines during World War II in the Pacific The ater. He was a communicant of St. Vincent Ferrer Church. During his youth, Jerry played the position of shortstop in the minor leagues for the Brooklyn Dodgers, and he also played baseball with the Marine Corps.

He is survived by one son, Thomas McCabe and his wife, Gerry; two daughters, Frances Smith and her husband, Richard, and Elizabeth Monahan and her husband, Richard, all of Nau gatuck; several nieces and nephews, many loving neighbors, and his compassionate caregiver, Mavel Bryan.

His funeral will be held on Wednesday, June 8, 2011, at 9:15 a.m. from the Naugatuck Valley Memorial/Fitzgerald Zembruski Funeral Home, 240 North Main St., Naugatuck, to St. Vincent Ferrer Church, 1006 New Haven Road, Naugatuck, for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Burial with mili tary honors will follow in St. James Cemetery, Cross Street, Nau gatuck. Calling hours will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. Members of the Naugatuck Veterans Council will meet at the funeral home on Tuesday at 6:15 p.m.
