Obituary: Walter J. Stankiewicz Jr. Dies at 79

Teamster, scout master, Korean War veteran, family man and lifelong Naugatuck resident.

NAUGATUCK — Mr. Walter J. Stankiewicz Jr., 79, of Naugatuck, passed away at Middlebury Convalescent Home on Thursday, April 12, 2012. He was the widower of Frances T. (DeCarlo) Stankiewicz.

Mr. Stankiewicz was born in Waterbury on June 7, 1932, a son of the late Walter J. Stankiewicz Sr. and Marie (Dupre) Stankiewicz. He was a lifelong Naugatuck resident and served in the U.S. Navy during the time of the Korean War. In a career where he drove over two million miles as a truck driver, Walt retired from Kimberly Clark. He was the safety chair at Kimberly Clark for many years.

Walt was the assistant scoutmaster, and scoutmaster of Troop 113 from Naugatuck that he served with his father. He held the distinction of building one of the first floats in the annual Naugatuck Memorial Day parade – a group of scouts recreating the flag scene from Iwo Jima in the bed of his pick up truck.  For his service to the Boy Scouts of America, he received the Silver Beaver Award. He was a member of the Retired Teamsters in Bridgeport. And, he and his wife, together with his parents, bowled for many years in the Military Bowling League. He was also a member of the where he had lunch almost every day for four years, and took part in many of their special dinner programs over the years. He was a communicant of St. Mary Church.

He leaves a son, William F. Stankiewicz and his wife Laurie of Bethany; a daughter, Pamela A. Monahan of Waterbury; two sisters, Janet Cabral and her husband Henry of Naugatuck, Nancy Candee and her husband Jay of Naugatuck; a grandson; several nieces and nephews.

His funeral will be held on Saturday, April 14 at 9:30 a.m. from the , 240 North Main St., Naugatuck to St. Mary Church, 338 North Main St., Naugatuck for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m.  Burial with military honors will follow in St. James Cemetery, Cross Street, Naugatuck.  Calling hours will be held at the funeral home on Saturday morning from 8:30-9:30 a.m.
