Police Gathering Information in Naugatuck Savings Bank Robbery in Southbury

Evidence lifted off getaway vehicle, obtained from sources, robbery investigation.

SOUTHBURY — State police say some information has been gathered in the ongoing investigation of a bank robbery in Southbury Wednesday morning.

Four armed men robbed Naugatuck Savings Bank, located at 363 Main St. South, shortly before 10 a.m. yesterday, the suspects then fled the scene with an undetermined amount of cash.

Connecticut State Police public information officer Lt. J. Paul Vance said police were able to gather information through questioning and the search of the suspect’s getaway car, a stolen minivan that was discarded just a few hundred yards from the bank.

“We are taking this matter very seriously and investigating the incident thoroughly,” said Vance. “We were able to pull some information off the vehicle and have gathered other information regarding the robbery.”

Vance was able to divulge little information regarding the police findings.

“For the sake of the ongoing investigation, none of the information we have at this time will be publicized,” said Vance.

Members of both the Southbury Police Department and State Police Troop ‘A’ located in Southbury have been told to direct all questions to the State of Connecticut Department of Public Safety Office at this time.

Vance said local police did receive notification of the robbery from bank personal, and given the immediate proximity of the Southbury Police Station to Naugatuck Savings Bank, were on scene within minutes.

Immediately following the incident all entrances and exits to Union Square, the plaza that houses the bank, were blocked by police. No one was allowed in or out of the plaza for several hours as police questioned all potential witnesses and nearby business owners.

Vance refused to say whether the robbery appeared to be carried out by “professionals."

“I don’t think you can call criminals professionals,” said Vance. “ I will say this though, it was potentially a very dangerous incident and we’re very fortunate that no one was injured.”

Police are asking anyone who may have been in the area and observed anything suspicious prior to or immediately after this robbery to contact State Police Troop ‘A’ in Southbury at (203) 267-2200.  All calls will be kept confidential
