Police: Man Took Pictures Of Little Girls at Quassy Park

Naugatuck Police are assisting Middlebury Police with the investigation.

A 25-year-old Waterbury man is being held on a $250,000 bond tonight for multiple charges stemming from an incident at Quassy Amusement Park in which he was allegedly taking photographs of little girls and a lifeguard.

Middlebury Police said the man fled when they responded to the park at about 6:15 on July 3. He led officers on a brief foot pursuit before being apprehended, police said.

A patron at the park noticed the individual and notified the on duty Life Guard who notified her bosses.

The man was initially arrested for interfering with an officer, but more charges started to pile up as officers attempted to process him for arrest, according to the police report, which was released July 4.

"The individual gave several different names and at one point stopped answering questions telling police he did not understand English," police said. "Police obtained assistance from the Naugatuck Police Department with a Spanish speaking officer, but still many different names were given as to his identification."

At that point, police said, additional charges were made, including criminal impersonation, second-degree forgery, and breach of peace.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was also contacted and added a Detainer Order on the suspect, police said.

The individual was booked under the name of John Miguel Mendez Calle, of 65 Ashley St., Waterbury.

Middlebury Police, with the assistance of a Naugatuck Police Detective, obtained a search warrant for the camera this afternoon, July 4.

"The camera will be downloaded in the morning of July 5, and if it contains matter which can viewed as criminal, additional charges will be filed," police said.

If anyone can confirm the individual's identity or knows the individual as somebody else, they are encouraged to contact the Middlebury Police at 203-577-4028.
