Sandy has left hundreds of thousands of Connecticut residents and businesses without power, including 871 in Naugatuck as of 6:30 p.m. CL&P crews are working to restore power but has not given Naugatuck a timetable about when that would occur.

Mayor Bob Mezzo put out a Code Red emergency notification about schools being open Wednesday, which reads as follows:

Naugatuck Schools will be closed again tomorrow (Wednesday, 10/31/2012).  Despite efforts to clear all downed trees and wires from numerous locations throughout the Borough today (10/30/2012), there are still several locations that could present hazardous conditions for walkers and school buses.  The Borough is reliant on Connecticut Light and Power to de-energize and remove dangerous lines before Borough crews can clear trees.

We expect all problem areas to be resolved by tomorrow (10/31/2012) night.  Traditional Halloween trick or treating will be allowed.  Parents are strongly advised, however, to use their own discretion, and exercise a heightened sense of caution and oversight while their children are trick or treating.

Utility (non-drinkable) water will be available for Naugatuck residents at the Naugatuck Fire Station, (41 Maple Street, Naugatuck, CT 06770), until 8:00 PM tonight (10/30/2012); and between 8:00 AM and 8:00 PM tomorrow (10/31/2012).  Said water can be used for such purposes as flushing toilets that are on well water systems, and/or washing kitchen utensils. Residents are asked to bring their own containers and enter on the Old Firehouse Road entrance.
