ROTC Cadets Clean Up Naugatuck River

A group of 34 borough students partook in the weekend event.

A hard working group of 37 Air Force Junior ROTC cadets cleaned up the east riverbank of the Naugatuck River in Linden Park this past weekend.

On Oct. 6 Lieutenant Colonel Valerie Lofland, USAF (ret) and Master Sergeant Gary Morrone, USAF (ret) lead the Naugatuck High School cadets in this effort to improve the quality of life in the Naugatuck River Valley.

The three-fold project included planting more than 40 pounds of grass seed, scores of streamco willow cuttings and other flowering plants as part of a beautification and erosion control projects. The birdhouses that were erected in the spring were cleaned out and several more were erected.  The newly placed houses will provide housing next spring for owls, wood ducks and tree swallows.

More than 25 bags of debris were removed.  The project was organized by Joe Savarese and Bob Gregorski of the Naugatuck River Watershed Association and sponsored by the borough of Naugatuck including the mayor’s office, Public Works and Recreation Departments. The Naugatuck-Pomperaug Chapter Trout Unlimited provided the grass seed.
