Naugy Wins Thriller on Senior Night

Kyle Plasky ripped a walk-off single in extra innings to lead the Naugatuck High School baseball team to a 2-1 victory over Torrington at Rotary Field Thursday on senior night.

Plasky, a junior second baseman, got up with bases loaded and stung a hard ground ball just left of the third baseman, who barely got the tip of his glove on the ball but couldn't make the play. Travis Wyant scored and the celebration began for Naugy.

"It felt great," Plasky said. "I've struggled throughout the season at the plate, but it's starting to come around so I was confident. I wanted to get this win for our seniors."

Plasky's cousin, Rick Plasky, pitched a complete game, plus the one extra inning. Despite the fact that he didn't strike anybody out, Plasky pitched a gem, mixing locations, and keeping hitters off balance while getting them to pop up or ground out.

Naugatuck Head Coach Tom Deller said his team has self-admittedly underachieved this season.

"Any win at this point is an accomplishment for us," he said. "We haven't gotten the wins we should have, and the kids know it. Hopefully, this will help us gain momentum moving forward."

The Greyhounds, 9-9, need a little help from other teams to get into the Naugatuck Valley League tournament. The win over Torrington, which had the same record as Naugy going into Thursday's game, will certainly help. The Greyhounds have already qualified for the state tournament.
