Walking 26 Minutes For 26 Victims

Students at City Hill Middle School are taking turns walking for 26 minutes around the school field to honor the victims of the Sandy Hook school shooting on Dec. 14.

The event was organized by eighth-grader Gina Rainone, who got a committee of students together to help with a week's worth of walks during study hall periods. The students walked for 26 minutes and each donated or raised money - at least $1 apiece - to the Dawn Lafferty Hochsprung Memorial Scholarship Fund. The scholarship is given in memory of the Sandy Hook principal, who was also a Naugatuck native. It is given annually to a Naugatuck High School student going into the field of education.

"This was all organized by the students, and I've been impressed with our team," said teacher Margaret Serafino. "They have been tremendous this year."

Part of the reason the students wanted to donate to the scholarship fund is because one of their own, eighth-grader Tyler Suarez, is Hochsprung's nephew.

Rainone said the event was held, "So we would be able to remember the victims."
